Get to Know Your Farmers

Hey! It is so fun to have you here with us! We are the Frey Family… Jesse, Lynn, Madilyn (4), Mallory (13), Maxwell (11), and Melanie (8). I’ve been growing a garden in our backyard since we bought a house back in 2008. Every year I would expand my skills and grow more and more. I was even starting my own seeds… in our basement windows. I would faithfully go down there and turn them daily. No grow lights. No heat mats. Believe it or not they grew and we were provided with plenty of produce for our family!

Each year the garden grew little by little. I found myself with a little plastic pop up greenhouse that I eventually moved from the basement to the greenhouse to harden them off before they hit the garden. That little pop up greenhouse sparked a huge desire for a real greenhouse. Jesse surprised me with a greenhouse for our 15th wedding anniversary!

2020 was my first year with the real greenhouse and I went all out! I grew so much that I was able to dip my toes into selling plants. At this time Jesse was also working virtually and was watching these people come and go with plants. His mind was blown that I actually had a little side hustle in our backyard.

In 2021 we decided that my backyard garden skills needed to move onto the next level and we tilled up fresh ground on our country property 10 miles out of town.

After all the plants came out to the property it was then time to move ourselves. We sold our house in town and moved out to the property as well. Absolutely the greenhouse came with too. I wasn’t leaving it behind. Our first year was a success. Lots of hard work and tough lessons learned. Once the first season was under our belt and the quiet of winter happened I was ready to do this again.

The second year was even better! We expanded and grew even more and had such amazing crops. We were able to do our first weekly/bi-weekly produce boxes and I experimented with creating farm fresh products. It was truly a great year. Except. Battling row covers in the spring wind… was not fun. Jesse immediately started his search for a high tunnel. He was able to locate one and get it set up before the snow! We are now going into 2023 with a new-to-us high tunnel and bigger dreams to see how much more we can grow! Our 2023 produce box season will kick off in May! Click over here to check it out.
