Best Way to Store Seeds
Now that you have your seeds what should you do with them? How do you store them until you are ready for planting? Do they go in the freezer? A cool dark room?
I use to keep all my seeds in the freezer. Until I started working with our seed farm mentors. As soon as I walked into their wood-heated home (wood-heated homes always seem to run really warm!) and saw that they stored most of their inventory right there… I immediately asked them, “the seeds are fine this warm?”
They quickly said, yes! All your seeds need is a warm dry place free from rodents and bugs. If by chance you have a desire to keep seeds forever, then you can put them in the freezer. But they will last about 5 years in a warm dry place. They are not as fussy as we think they are - they will happily wait until we let them know it is time to grow by adding in the water, soil & sunshine!!
Which leads me to… don’t toss out your unused seeds. Only want to grow 5 of the 20 tomato seeds? Plant the 5 seeds and hold onto the rest for next year. I have lettuce seeds as old as 2018 that I am still growing. Since getting a greenhouse I have been known to leave my seed packets inside the greenhouse during planting season. The greenhouse is well over 100 degrees each day and those seeds are still growing!! Remember, not as fussy as we think or have been told.
On the counter. In a closet. In a drawer. Just don’t forget where you put them!! 😅
I store my seeds inside photo boxes. I use a wet-erase marker and write what’s inside. It comes with a carrying case and so they are all together in one case! Super slick to transport to where ever you want to start seeds.
